Fast Facts on the Most Common STDs in the US

The following data present the three most common sexually transmitted diseases in the United States. The findings were based on the statistics released in 2009 for the year 2008 by the United States Center for Disease Control.Chlamydia.This is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States. In 2008, more than 1.2 million cases of Chlamydia have been reported to the Center for Disease Control. It should be noted that many persons who are infected with Chlamydia do not experience physical symptoms at all; therefore, some cases of infection are undetected and unreported. And with this, it is estimated that there are roughly 2.8 million actual cases of Chlamydia in the US each year.In America, the rate of infection caused by Chlamydia is around 401.3 cases per 100,000 persons. And the most at risk are younger women and those who belong to the minorities. In 2008, young women whose ages ranged from 15 to 19 years made up the highest numbers of reported cases and the highest rates of infection by Chlamydia.Infection among men is reportedly rising with a 45% increase between 2004 and 2008.Gonorrhea.This disease is the second most common sexually transmitted infection in the US.There were 336,742 reports of gonorrhea infections in 2008.Like Chlamydia, some people do not experience symptoms of gonorrhea at all even if they are infected, making some infections go unreported. The rate of gonorrhea infection in the US is 111.6 cases per 100,000 persons.Since 2000, the rates of infection for men and women remained almost unchanged. The rates of infection in 2008 are 119.4 per 100,000 people for women and 103.0 cases per 100,000 people for men.The highest rate of gonorrhea infection is found in young women and teenage girls.Syphilis.This disease was almost completely eliminated some years ago but has become a threat to health again since its rise in 2001.Year 2008 had the highest number of reported cases of syphilis since 1995.From 2007, the rate of infection rose to 18% in the next year. This infection continues to be reported the highest within the gay male circle where homosexual sex occurs. The CDC revealed that in 2008, 63% of reported syphilis infections are among gay and bisexual men compared to only 4% in 2000.From 2007 to 2008, the rate of infection among women in the US increased to 36%.
